For CPAs and advisors
What about the AICPA guidance and IRS Section 7216?
As a referral partner, you introduce business owners. Your own clients’ data isn’t what’s being licensed. Each business decides about its own records and applies directly with the buyer.
In November 2026 the Journal of Accountancy (AICPA) urged firms to be very cautious about sharing firm data for AI training: decline unless clients give specific consent, and remember that removing names doesn’t make client information non-confidential and that tax return information raises IRS Section 7216 issues. Please don’t share client information or tax return information as part of a referral. Read the article (Journal of Accountancy, Nov 2026).
